Since October 7, 2023, more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been living under a suffocating siege and brutal aggression imposed by the occupying entity, in one of the most horrific forms of genocide known in modern history. This aggression is not just a military attack; it is a comprehensive war of extermination targeting humans, land.and infrastructure, with various forms of suffering, including bombing and destruction, but also a devastating war of starvation, aimed at breaking the will and determination of the Palestinian people.
In this tragic context, reports from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) highlight the humanitarian catastrophe engulfing the Gaza Strip, where humanitarian aid is scarce amidst the escalating crisis.
UNRWA, which the occupying entity has decided to ban from operating in the occupied territories, confirmed that humanitarian aid to Gaza is “insufficient” in the face of the “catastrophic” situation in the Strip. Louise Wootredj, official at UNRWA, stated, “The aid entering Gaza has reached its lowest levels in months, with an average of 37 trucks a day across the entire Gaza Strip in October.” She emphasized, “37 trucks a day for a population of 2.2 million people, who need everything, is utterly insufficient.”
Wootredj also reminded that a report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification had warned just a few days ago of the imminent and severe risk of famine in northern Gaza. She said, “While we are receiving testimonies from people on the ground begging for scraps of bread or water, the United Nations remains banned from accessing this area, and no food has been allowed into the besieged northern Gaza region for an entire month. All UN requests for access to this area have been denied.”
Meanwhile, Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, warned just days ago of the likelihood of famine in northern Gaza, pointing out that “Israel” has used hunger as a weapon by depriving people in Gaza of essentials, including food needed for survival. He explained, “The aid entering Gaza is insufficient, averaging just over 30 trucks a day, which covers only about 6% of the daily needs of the Palestinians.”
It is also worth noting that the Israeli Knesset has recently passed a law prohibiting UNRWA’s activities in the occupied territories, despite international and UN warnings about the dangers of this legislation, which violates international laws and agreements.
