The United States used its veto power against an Algerian draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, during the Security Council session held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
The draft resolution, which calls for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that should be respected by all parties,” received the support of 13 members of the Security Council, against the objection of one member and the abstention the British representative from voting.
Algeria’s permanent representative to the Security Council, Ammar Benjamea, urged the members of the Security Council to vote in favor of the draft resolution, noting that “the members of the Council were given a long time to study the draft resolution and we see it as reasonable,” calling on the international community to take immediate measures.
He considered that “voting in favor of the draft resolution represents support for the Palestinians’ right to life, and voting against it means agreeing to starvation as a method of war.”

Algeria had launched consultations on the draft resolution following the decision of the International Court of Justice, at the end of last January, in which it called on the usurping entity to prevent any possible act of “genocide” in Gaza.

Since October 7, the start of the aggression on the Gaza Strip, 29,195 Palestinians were martyred and 69,170 wounded, most of them are women and children, according to the Palestinian authorities.
This aggression caused “massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to the United Nations.
